About Sam's Deli
Located in the Belmont Building at 805 Government Street, Sam's Deli was founded by Sam Bawlf
in 1972 who was then a cabinet minister in the provincial government. In 1976, it was sold to
Bruce and Barbara Housser who owned and operated it for 28 years. Under their guidance,
Sam's Deli grew from a local sandwich shop to a Victoria landmark as the word of their
tasty offerings spread amongst locals and visitors to Victoria. It is now often
recommended not only for its central location, but also for its delicious menu of
fresh-made, generous-portioned sandwiches and soups and easy atmosphere.
In 2004, Rogers' Chocolates of Victoria purchased the deli -
determined to uphold the fine standards that had made both Sam's Deli
and Rogers' Chocolates famous Victoria establishments. The new owners
have introduced Rogers' Premium Ice Cream, a much larger selection of
cold drinks, locally made wines and
beer,
and a number of desserts featuring Rogers' famous chocolate
(the cookies and brownies seem to be the most popular!).
