Located in the historic Belmont Building at 805 Government Street, Sam’s Deli was founded by Sam Bawlf in 1972 who at the time was a cabinet minister in the provincial government. In 1976, it was sold to Bruce and Barbara Housser who owned and operated it for 28 years. Under their guidance, Sam’s Deli grew from a local sandwich shop to a Victoria landmark as the word of their tasty offerings spread among locals and visitors to Victoria. It is now often recommended not only for its central location, but also for its delicious menu of fresh-made, generous-portioned sandwiches and soups and casual and friendly atmosphere.
In 2004, Rogers’ Chocolates of Victoria purchased the deli, who were determined to uphold the standards that had made both Sam’s Deli and Rogers’ Chocolates famous Victoria establishments.
In 2010, a former Rogers’ Chocolates employee, Kate Phoenix, purchased the deli. Having dined there regularly, she had been a fan of Sam’s for over 25 years. Kate is passionate and dedicated to maintaining what has made the deli so well known, while continuing to improve the reputation that had been built up over the years. Kate is keen to hold onto the traditions of fresh soups, handmade sandwiches and salads made from fine ingredients while developing more in-house made fresh items to include local, tasty bistro fare.
